CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM ON WHEELS BRAKES FOR DAY BREAK ADULT DAY SERVICE

The Civil Rights Museum on Wheels will stop by Day Break Adult Day Service on Monday, July 7 at 1:00 pm. Day Break, an adult day program sponsored by St. John's Home, is located at 150 Highland Avenue. This will be the first stop the bus has made at an adult day program since its debut in February.

The bus, sponsored by the Center for the Study of Civil and Human Rights Laws, helps “passengers” step back in time to December 1, 1955, when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Mongomery, Alabama. Nearly one year later, buses in that city were successfully integrated and the modern day civil rights era began. The outside of the bus has been completely restored to look exactly like the bus Parks rode on. In contrast, the inside has been left untouched, except for the addition of state-of-the-art audio, computer and interactive technology, which allows people to listen to Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., and test their knowledge of American Civil Rights history.

The visit is part of St. John's commitment to life-long learning and recognizing cultural diversity in the aging population. Lynn Pierce, director of Day Break, states, “As we embrace the Eden Alternative and culture change, it is our responsibility to recognize diversity and the special talents of our participants and staff members.”

St. John's Home is Rochester’s only registered Eden Home, providing a continuum of care for the elderly in Rochester since 1899 as a not-for-profit residential health care facility. In addition to Day Break's medical and social adult day services, specialty programs include Comfort Care, Rehabilitation, and Alzheimer's/dementia care, as well as long term care. St. John’s Home and the Rochester Presbyterian Home are the only Eden Alternative providers in upstate New York. Affiliated with St. John's Home as part of St. John's Senior Communities are St. John's Meadows and St. John's Foundation.
